As I prepare for my trip, I'm faced with two tasks: One, extract as much information as I can on Sierra Leone from UCLA before my library card expires. Two, stockpile enough reading to last me the next year in a town without a Borders. To each of these ends, I've decided to enter into tukopamoja's Africa Reading Challenge.
In the next months, I will read the following books (and others) and review them on the site. See tukopamoja's page for reviews by other challenge participants. The goal is to read a broad spectrum of books on the continent. Given my current work, please excuse the fact that the list is a little Sierra Leone heavy.
1. Lucilda Hunter, "Road to Freedom," Sierra Leone.
2. R. Sarif Easmon, "The Fued," Sierra Leone.
3. Paul Richards, "Fighting for the Rainforest: War, Youth & Resources in Sierra Leone", Sierra Leone.
4. David Keen, "Complex Emergencies," Sudan.
5. Chinua Achebe, "Things Fall Apart," Nigeria.
Any suggestions? I have three weeks to buy books. Share your suggestions in the comments section.
